Patient Safety
Patient Safety
Patients and their families have a right to valid information about the care they receive in the hospital of their choice. We understand that, and that is why we are posting information on the key quality indicators at Anna Jaques Hospital.
By reporting this data publicly, we take the first step in our commitment to transparency, and the opportunity for patients and their families to make informed decisions about their healthcare.
How to view this page:
Data from Anna Jaques Hospital is also reported on the Massachusetts Hospital Association's Patients First website, www.patientsfirstma.org. This site reports how our hospital meets agreed-upon national guidelines for 26 different measures relating to patient falls, falls with injury, heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, surgical site infection. Our data is also available on www.hospitalcompare.hhs.gov.
(There is a time lag in the public posting of the data on sites such as Medicare and other state or national organizations that report our data, as data is gathered on different timetables. As a result, some data may appear to be current and some may seem older. More recent data is more relevant, since it more accurately shows the current status at our organization.)
Why report this data?
Increasingly patients and families, as well as businesses and insurers, will want evidence that the care they receive can be measured, rated, and compared to care they might choose elsewhere. At Anna Jaques we have joined the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) national initiative to save lives in hospitals by following evidence-based care approaches in six pilot areas that include infections, and the treatment of unexpected deterioration in a patient's condition. We will pay attention to, and work to bring our rankings on all quality scorecards to the highest level, both for public confidence and in order to improve care available in the community.
Anna Jaques Hospital Patient Satisfaction Data
Patients receiving inpatient, emergency department and ambulatory surgery services are mailed, on a random selection basis, a patient satisfaction survey by Press Ganey, a national organization conducting these surveys for thousands of hospitals. The Press Ganey survey gives patients the opportunity to express their opinions honestly about the care and the caregivers, at the hospital.
What Do the Graphs Say?
The graphs below show Anna Jaques Hospital's survey results for the last four quarters. The blue line shows hospital performance, over time, in each specific area. Each time a goal is reached, we mark the point with a star to celebrate our success.
These charts show our "percentile ranking". A percentile shows the percentage of scores falling at or below a given score. For example, the 89th percentile rank means that Anna Jaques Hospital scored higher than 89 percent of the Massachusetts hospitals in the Press Ganey measured group.

Healthcare Associated Infections
Healthcare associated infections have become an area of extraordinary focus in the hospital community, and are increasingly understood by the public. It is now recognized that by instituting appropriate preventive measures certain types of infections can be 100% preventable and therefore lives can be saved. These include central line infections (infections from intravenous lines that are placed in a large central vein), ventilator associated pneumonia, and some types of surgical site infections.
