To Provide Medical and Emotional Support, Just for You

When you’re a patient at the Gerrish Breast Care Center, you’ll never go it alone. Our Patient Navigator, Kathy Porter, RN, is here for you, every step of the way. She will help you schedule the treatment you need, prepare you for your next appointment, and help educate and support the emotional needs of you and your family. Having a dedicated team member working with you to schedule services ensures you get everything you need in a way that suits your schedule and lifestyle.

While we pride ourselves on offering everything you need right here in the Newburyport area, our collaboration with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) further enhances the advanced clinical expertise available to patients. Specialists from BIDMC are a part of the Center’s multidisciplinary team. They provide an additional tertiary perspective and participate in treatment planning.

Peter Hartmann, MD, FACS

Leader in Breast Cancer Treatment Heads Medical Team

Dr. Peter Hartmann is a board-certified general surgeon who brings nearly 25 years of private surgical practice to the role of Medical Director. Since arriving in Newburyport, Dr. Hartmann has been involved with the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer since 1989. He has had a special interest in breast surgery for decades, and was among the first to use the sentinel node biopsy in New England in the 1990s. Over the years, he has performed approximately 1,000 breast procedures. As a dedicated breast surgeon he focuses exclusively on a variety of breast procedures related to the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.

Kathy Porter, RN, OCN

Kathy Porter, RN, OCN, has over 25 years of experience in nursing. She is an Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) by the Oncology Nursing Society with additional training in breast health.  She was a three year recipient of a Susan G. Komen for the Cure community grant and served as a community ambassador for the American Cancer Society.  She has spoken at the local and national levels on patient navigation sharing her 14 years of experience in this specialized role. 

She strongly believes in patient empowerment and education whether a woman is being followed for prevention of breast cancer, benign breast disease or living with a cancer diagnosis.  She can be reached at 978-255-4741 for any breast health issues or concerns. In addition to working with patients confirmed with cancer, Kathy is also directly involved with patients at elevated risk for hereditary cancer and benign breast problems. She also helps identify resources in the community that can benefit patients at various points along their journey.

Jonathan Arnow, MD

Breast Imaging Specialist

Jonathan Arnow, MD, is a board-certified radiologist who specializes in reading breast imaging films, such as mammograms. Dr. Arnow attended medical school at University of Connecticut, did his residency at Tufts New England Medical Center and his fellowship at Brigham and Women's hospital in Boston.
