Neurology

Neurology is a medical specialty dealing with disorders of the nervous system. Specifically, it deals with the diagnosis and treatment of all categories of disease involving the central, peripheral, and autonomic nervous systems, including their coverings, blood vessels, and all tissues. Neurologists are trained to investigate, diagnose and treat neurological disorders.

Telestroke Service

Anna Jaques is an accredited stroke facility and provides evaluations of potential stroke patients in our Emergency Department 24 hours a day.  This is done at the patient’s bedside using state-of-the-art telemedicine.  At the earliest sign of a stroke, call 911 for assistance. 

Anna Jaques is contracted with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center's Telestroke service to provide our Emergency Department physicians with around-the-clock access to board certified neurologists. When a patient is suffering from stroke-like symptoms, AJH physicians and the neurologists use the Telestroke service to talk to one another face-to-face over a high speed internet connection and “Skype-like” video technology to examine the patient together and discuss the best course of treatment.

Our collaboration with Telestroke is helping us to improve outcomes for patients and to save lives. It is particularly helpful in the decision whether or not the patient with stroke symptoms should be given the clot-dissolving medication, tPA. 

Neurology Services

AJH collaborates with New England Neurological Associates, P.C., specializing in epileptology, the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy, in addition to general neurology. The practice’s resources include neurosurgery, spine surgery, neurology, physiatry, pain medicine, rheumatology, psychiatry and psychology.

EEG/EMG Testing

• Electroencephalogram (EEG) - is a procedure that records the brain's continuous, electrical activity by means of electrodes attached to the scalp.
• Electro Diagnostic Tests (i.e., electromyography and nerve conduction velocity) - are studies that evaluate and diagnose disorders of the muscles and motor neurons. Electrodes are inserted into the muscle, or placed on the skin overlying a muscle or muscle group, and electrical activity and muscle response are recorded.

Diagnostic Testing

• Diagnostic Neurology (hours by appointment) - is the scientific study of the nervous system. Anna Jaques Hospital uses several procedures to diagnose neurologic disorders or diseases.
